We got some super Self Creams from Craig Patterson when we started up again, he had some real crackers, he gave us the pick of what he had and we came home with quite a few. glenwhilk stud was now ready to breed some creams. mum had plenty young boars too all very typey for boars with very good colour. Before long we had bred a few and the Cranna bloodline and the Glenwhilk line proved to produce what we were looking for it gave us quite a few very typey pigs, colour well not bad at first a little work to be done but again mum knows exactly what she is doing with the creams. One of mums most well known creams was Glenwhilks Popcorn who had a string of wins, a few Best In Shows she had everything that a cream should be. so the creams are definately a work in progress but we are getting there. With the creams its very difficult to get the desired colour that everyone wants, as we have found out over the years, i don't think I have met 2 judges who like the same colour! this can benefit as you are able to put the colour out that that judge likes!! some like them dark, some like them wishy washy and others like them inbetween!! In a good stud of creams it is good to keep a few buffs as creams do not breed true or so it is said however recently we put 2 creams in the breeding pen 10 weeks later we had a litter of lovely creams good colour too which puts my knowledge of genetics to the test!! before this I put a cream crested to a self cream and they produced 1 very beautiful white crested boar now i know for a fact both parents had white in the line so it made sense. We have been showing our creams and they have done extremely well getting some positive feedback from judges both in Scotland and in England, which has been great for us and really given us all inspiration and work at our creams. We are aiming to breed a cream that excels in type(we have a few of these at present) and has the colour that is desired by all...definately a work in progress but we will get there. We have a few very promising youngsters for the show bench next year.
We have had a reserve B.I.S and a few places in the grand challenge this year with our creams, the ultimate for me personally was this year at the S.N.C.C show where one of our home bred creams was 6th in the Grand Challenge and Best D/E cream. The comment from the judge Pete Holdaway was great especially when the cream is a pig that he breeds so he really knows his stuff. I am aiming for the ultimate prize next year A BEST IN SHOW with one of our creams!! We have some lovely creams to work away with, we love this breed and are very proud to have such beauties in our shed. I hope you enjoy looking at them.
